WHERE IS LIBERIA IN THE GLOBAL RANKING OF SAFE ROADS?

According to the United Nations World Health Organization’s latest assessments—reflected in the “Road Safety Liberia 2023 Country Profile” published on April 30, 2024—Liberia continues to register an alarming road safety record. The profile highlights that Liberia remains among the countries with the highest road traffic fatality rates globally, with estimates suggesting a rate in the region of approximately 35–40 fatalities per 100,000 population. This extraordinarily high figure starkly contrasts with global averages and underscores critical shortcomings in road infrastructure, enforcement of traffic laws, and driver education across the country

Moreover, the WHO’s broader analysis in the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 emphasizes that while global road traffic deaths have seen slight declines (with overall annual fatalities around 1.19 million worldwide), many low- and middle-income countries, including Liberia, continue to lag far behind due to systemic challenges. The country’s record—marked by high fatality rates and significant numbers of nonfatal injuries, is driving the need for urgent interventions. These include improvements in infrastructure, stricter law enforcement, and robust public education campaigns to elevate road safety standards nationally.
